For this project, our studio worked alongside the St. Louis Botanical Garden and the campesinas that currently operate the farm to program the spaces that they would need to expand their ability to
grow the endangered Espeletia plant.
The site is steep, at a high elevation, and cold, with impressive views. This design arrays a series of independent buildings along view corridors down the slope. Each building has a central greenhouse to
capture heat, and is constructed using thick thermal stone walls. Each is optimized to maintain a comfortable interior temperature as the site is so rural it will not have access to electricity. Sliding wood screens provide the living spaces with privacy, and public spaces between the buildings provide opportunities for social interaction.
